Eurocontrol collects route charges on behalf of its member organizations. There are two types of route charges:
- Terminal charges
- Enroute charges
Route charges are calculated for each terminal and enroute sector based on formulae published by Euroncontrol. The cost depends on the aircraft’s MTOM, the sector it’s flying through and the covered distance.
To make it easier for pilots, autorouter calculates the route charges and displays them. The charges are shown for each area with the net price and VAT. In order to do the calculation, autorouter makes use of the official data published by Eurocontrol which is updated on a regular base.
While usually aircraft below 2t MTOM and aircraft flying under VFR are excluded from charges, this is not always true. Also sometimes small charges apply but Eurocontrol choose not collect those charges for economical reasons.
